Why is Sleep Important for Your Skin
The skin is the largest organ on the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet. The skin protects us from microbes and the elements, helps regulate body temperature, and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold. During sleep, your skin’s blood flow increases, and the organ rebuilds its collagen and repairs damage from UV exposure, reducing wrinkles and age spots. Inadequate sleep raises your cortisol levels. This hormone triggers inflammation, which breaks down the proteins that keep your skin smooth and glowing. Inflammation can also make your skin prone to acne and more sensitive to allergic reactions. A study in the journal Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found that people who slept seven to nine hours a night had skin that was more moisturised and that could protect and heal itself better after being exposed to ultraviolet light compared to those who slept five hours or less. It is recommended that the best time to sleep for skin is to get to bed before midnight.
Things you can do before bed to wake up with glowing skin.
Go to bed with clean skin by washing your face. Sometimes washing your face at the end of the day seems like an impossibly big task, but it must be done if you want to wake up with glowing skin! Your face picks up pollutants, dirt, and skin oils from your hair and fingers throughout the day. During the night, your skin cells regenerate, and the dead ones rub off. However, this process doesn’t go as smoothly if your skin isn’t clean. A build up of grime or makeup or other pollutants makes it hard for your skin to get rid of those dead skin cells. Washing your face at night, even with just plain water, makes a real difference. Our Liquid soap 3 in 1 can be used for your face as well as hands and body. It is packed with moisturising aloe vera juice and refreshing lemon balm extract to keep skin cleansed and refreshed. It is now available for half price!
Skip the cheese. Cheese can wreak havoc on your skin. Giving cheese and other dairy products a miss can help your skin greatly. Research has proven that dairy promotes acnes, but particularly pasteurised dairy. The theory is that dairy ramps up inflammation, which in turn can trigger breakouts. Craving a snack before bed? Go for something that will give skin a boost like antioxidant-packed blueberries or strawberries.
Drink plenty of water. Skin care tips don’t get easier, cheaper, and healthier than this. Drink at least a litre of water overnight for glowing skin in the morning. Keep it beside your bed, and it you wake up thirsty, take a couple of sips. If you don’t drink overnight, drink first thing in the morning. Beware: this tip may have you running to the bathroom through the night, but your skin will appreciate it!
We hope you all get a great night’s sleep and wake up with beautiful glowing skin.
